The Board of Education for Coast Mountains School District 82 affirms its commitment to Indigenous Peoples and Reconciliation by building relationships and deepening understanding of Indigenous history, worldviews, and ways of knowing.

In the month of June, we celebrate National Indigenous History Month to honour the history, heritage and diversity of Indigenous Peoples in Canada.

On Monday, June 21,  National Indigenous Peoples Day, we celebrate the heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding achievements of First Nations, Inuit and Métis and we honour the very positive and profound impact of Indigenous communities and culture in Canada.

In our places of learning, First Nations Peoples of the Gitxsan, Haisla, Nisga’a and Tsimshian Territories, their unceded lands, their communities, their languages, and their cultures are acknowledged with gratitude and respect.

Collaboration in the district continues through the commitment of support staff, teachers, principals, district leadership, the Indigenous community and parents learning together to deepen understanding of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Social Justice for all learners and colleagues.

Indigenous Day Celebrations on June 21 happen at every CMSD82 school and are celebrated in a variety of ways.  More and more often schools are making Indigenous Day celebrations their own, finding unique ways to recognize Indigenous people and culture.

The ongoing connections between local Elders, Knowledge Keepers, First Nations Support/Youth Workers and the students and staff in School Distsrict 82 have been carefully nurtured through the pandemic.  This year was exceptional in that the COVID-19 pandemic prevents schools from having any large group celebrations of Indigenous culture.

Modifications will be made at each school so that Indigenous Day Celebrations can be recognized in smaller group settings and with COVID-19 safety protocols in place. Students will take part in a variety of events including storytelling, learning about traditional dance, drum making, Indigenous arts, and learning about local Indigenous culture.

CMSD82’s work to support Indigenous students is grounded in our valuable partnerships within our communities, our schools, our region, and throughout the province. Over the coming years, we will continue to work with our partners in our areas of strength and challenge.
