CMSD82 News Release – Caledonia Secondary School Sanofi Biogenius Grant Recipient
(News Release link in PDF Format)

Congratulations to Caledonia Secondary School recipient of the Sanofi Biogenius Grant in the sum of $50,000 … strengthening equity in STEM learning for Canadian students, by revitalizing science education in classrooms.

The Sanofi Biogenius Grant program serves to provide diverse Canadian students with access to scientific equipment and learning resources to create opportunities for hands-on learning in school – breaking down barriers, stimulating curiosity and motivating students to explore STEM.  Recipients will use these funds to renovate existing laboratory facilities, purchase new science equipment, develop programs that maximize the impact of their lab, or any combination of the above to help pave the way for the next generation of leaders – great thinkers, innovators, and expert researchers who will shape the future of our country.  To learn more visit Biogenius Grant Winners 2021, Sanofi Biogenius Canada (click on link).

A special thank-you is extended to Kelley Axelson, Science Teacher at Caledonia Secondary School for her dedicated efforts in making application for the Sanofi Biogenius Grant.  This grant will enable Caledonia Secondary School to upgrade their science laboratories and allow students to explore experiential learning in a deeper and more meaningful way, paving the way for them to be prepared and inspired to become the researchers of tomorrow.

Proficiency in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects is becoming increasingly important.  Funds to facilitate and extend learning opportunities for students are needed to help support schools, particularly in more isolated northern communities such as ours.  Access to more modern equipment would help to bring new learning experiences into classrooms and provide students with more equitable opportunities to be innovators, regardless of their location or socio-economic status.

Many students at Caledonia Secondary School are passionate about STEM, but do not have access to the same opportunities to discover and innovate as students in larger centers.  This is primarily due to limited budgets and lack of access to up-to-date equipment and outreach programs.

We are grateful and proud of Kelley’s initiative and determination in applying for this beneficial grant that will empower more young scientists reach their potential than ever before at Caledonia Secondary School.
