CMSD82 News Release, Acknowledging the Loss of an Amazing Colleague, Hilda Olson  (PDF Format)

It is with a deep sense of loss and profound sadness that we inform employees of the passing of school district retiree, Hilda Olson on January 21, 2022.  Hilda passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family following a courageous battle with cancer.

Hilda joined the school district on November 1993 as a Home School Coordinator, renamed in later years to First Nations Support Worker, at New Hazelton Elementary School.  For the past 28 years, Hilda held this position at New Hazelton Elementary School where the students and staff adored her.  She took great pride in her role advocating for the children of New Hazelton Elementary School with her wonderful charm and sense of humour to make every situation better.  Hilda retired on January 4, 2022.

Hilda spent countless hours working with the families and children of New Hazelton Elementary School.  She provided breakfasts for students in the mornings ensuring every child was fed, as every child mattered to her.  She always had a shoulder to cry on when emotional support was needed, but she could also be the stern granny too.  Hilda helped organize Remembrance Day Ceremonies ensuring the veterans felt welcome and were well fed following the ceremony.  On Graduation Day for the Grade 7’s, Hilda ensured each student felt special and she shared words of encouragement and wisdom with them for the next chapter of their educational journey.  She loved to dress up for Halloween and have laughs with the kids.  Hilda worked with many parents that attended New Hazelton Elementary School as students and then worked with their children.

In lieu of flowers in her memory, Hilda’s wish was for gift cards, backpacks and school supplies to be provided for the children at New Hazelton Elementary School.  A Celebration of Life in honour of Hilda will be held in late spring or summer pending COVID-19 provincial regulations.

On behalf of Coast Mountains School District, we extend our love and deepest condolences to Hilda’s family and her many friends and acquaintances.

Hilda will be dearly missed by all, expressly by the many people who had the privilege to know her personally.  The impact Hilda has had on New Hazelton Elementary School is immeasurable … she will be forever loved and missed.
