Coast Mountains School District’s new seven-member Board of Education elected by the public for the four-year term commencing November 2022 to November 2026 were officially sworn in as School Trustees on Tuesday, November 17 at 5:30 p.m. during an Oath of Office ceremony held at the Board of Education Office.

Trustee Electoral Area 2 (Terrace) – Margaret Warcup
Trustee Electoral Area 3 (Thornhill) – Mike Maxim
Trustee Electoral Area 4 (Stewart) – Wayne Jones
Trustee Electoral Area 5 (Hazelton) – Julia Sundell

Prior to the Oath of Office ceremony, family, friends, community members and staff were welcomed to the unceded and traditional territories of Gitxsan, Haisla, Nisga’a and Tsimshian Peoples by Emily Bryant of the Laxbhibuu Clan, member of the Kitsumkalum Nation.  A Welcome Song was performed by George Peal, Indigenous Support Worker from Suwilaawks Community School in honour of the new Board of Education.  Superintendent Aaron Callaghan shared opening remarks, welcoming the new Board to the school district community.  He acknowledged the exciting opportunities ahead of the Board in fulfilling the Strategic Plan and collective call-to-action for the Board and staff in support of students.

The Inaugural Meeting followed the Oath of Office ceremony chaired by Secretary Treasurer Ginger Fuller with the Board Elections for the period of November 2022 to November 2023 as the only agenda item:

  • Trustee Margaret Warcup was elected to the position of Board Chairperson and Trustee Karen Jonkman to the position of Vice Chairperson.
  • Trustee Karen Jonkman was elected as the BCPSEA (BC Public School Employers’ Association) Delegate and Trustee Margaret Warcup as the Alternate.
  • Trustee Julia Sundell was elected as the BCSTA (BC School Trustees Association) Provincial Councillor and Trustee Ed Harrison as the Alternate.
