The Ministry of Education has informed education partners and school districts of the following potential data breach.
An unencrypted external hard drive which contains student data cannot be found. Ministry staff are continuing their efforts to locate the missing hard drive.
Meanwhile, as the protection of personal information and privacy is of the utmost importance and a top priority of school districts and the provincial government and out of an abundance of caution, the provincial government issued a public notification yesterday, September 22, of this potential data breach. For your information, we share the following communication received from the Ministry of Education’s Student Information Services and Services & Technology Division relating to the data security and personal information within MyEducation BC.
Since the release of the information about the missing hard drive, we have had questions about the security of data and personal information in MyEducation BC. The service was designed with privacy and information security in mind in all aspects of the application. We have created an information page that does address a number of the frequently asked questions about the security and protection of information within MyEducation BC. It also includes the following link to the privacy training created for all users of the service. This training was reviewed by the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner.
