A fire occurred at our Mount Elizabeth Middle/Secondary School (MEMSS) located in Kitimat this morning, August 12. Fire damage was limited to a wall area that separates the small and large gymnasiums where the fire originated through the roof area.
The fire was contained immediately with our appreciation to the Kitimat Fire Department for their quick and efficient response in handling this incident. The Kitimat Fire Department will remain on site to monitor fire hot spots.
We are grateful to acknowledge there were no injuries during this incident and that no adults and students were in the school at this time.
The school district’s Superintendent of Schools, MEMSS Principal and Vice Principal, and Maintenance Department are on site with restoration plans underway.
The resulting fire and fire suppression used to contain the fire has impacted the usage of the gymnasiums for an undetermined period. The remaining areas of the school will ready for the start of school in September 2020. Any impact to the air quality of the school due the fire will be assessed to ensure safety prior to the return of students and staff.
