Dear Parents, Guardians and Caregivers,

We have been advised by the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) of a one-day rotating strike on Monday, June 16, 2014 followed by a full withdrawal strike starting Tuesday, June 17, 2014.

As a result, teachers will not be reporting for duty to Coast Mountains School District on Monday, June 16, 2014. School buses will not be running on June 16 and we are requesting that parents do not send their children to school on this day. While school facilities will remain open under the supervision of school district staff, we will be unable to provide students with instruction during this period of job action. In addition, we are not able to guarantee the safety of students.

This could possibly mean that Friday, June 13, 2014 will be the last day of school for this school year. With this in mind, I would ask you to ensure that your children take home as much as possible. After this date, parents may pick up their child’s belongings in person until July 4, 2014 noting that schools are closed on Canada Day, July 1.

It is important for you to know, however, that Provincial Exams will continue as scheduled for Grades 10 to 12 students as the Labour Relations Board has deemed this an essential service. Please ensure that your children follow the Provincial Exam Schedule and that they report to school to write their necessary exams, in accordance with the exam schedule.

I am asking parents to have their Grade 10, Grade 11 and Grade 12 students report to school only as necessary to write their exams. Please contact your school directly or check the school website for the Provincial Exam Schedule. There will be special entrances designated with signage posted at each school for students to attend their exams without having to cross the picket line as detailed below. Entrance times for exams are 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Caledonia Secondary School
– gym entrance, use student parking lot driveway entrance off Straume Avenue

Hazelton Secondary School
– main entrance to computer lab, use daycare driveway entrance

Kitimat City High School
– main entrance off Cormorant Street

 Mount Elizabeth Middle/Secondary School
– first entrance on the right by the Kitimat Child Development Centre parking lot:
use KCDC driveway (Theatre Parking Lot)

 North Coast Distance Education School
– Maintenance entrance immediately north/adjacent to the Yellow School House

 Parkside Secondary School
– gym entrance

Busses will only run for students writing Provincial Exams on scheduled exam dates. Please refer to your school website to confirm routes and times.

Grade 12 Graduation Ceremonies at Caledonia Secondary, Hazelton Secondary and Mount Elizabeth Middle/Secondary Schools will go ahead as planned and previously communicated to students and families. All other school-sponsored year-end activities are cancelled for the duration of the strike. If you have specific questions or concerns regarding your children or your school, please contact your school principal or check your school website.

We anticipate further clarification from the Labour Relations Board regarding report cards. A further update will be forthcoming at that time.

We are hopeful for a resolution to the labour dispute and we will keep parents, guardians and caregivers informed. Should the British Columbia Public School Employers’ Association (BCPSEA) and the BCTF come to an agreement, schools could re-open before the end of June.

As further information becomes available, the school district will provide updates. For our most recent and regular updates for this job action, please refer to the local radio station in your community and the school district website at www.cmsd.bc.ca.

Sincerely yours,

Katherine McIntosh
Superintendent of Schools
