CMSD82 News Release – Robert Clifton, Director of Instruction, Indigenous Education Appointment

 

The Board of Education for Coast Mountains School District is pleased to announce the appointment of Robert Clifton to the position of Director of Instruction, Indigenous Education effective August 1, 2022.

Robert brings over twenty-five years of experience in education having taught elementary school for 20+ years before creating impact as the Indigenous Education Consultant for the Vancouver School Board for four years.  His teaching is grounded in fostering positive personal and cultural identity and inspiring his students in understanding their role and responsibilities in creating a more equitable and just world.  During the past year, Robert assumed a secondment position as an Adjunct Professor and Faculty Associate with the University of British Columbia, bringing his skills and passion for teaching and innovative pedagogical approaches to coach and mentor aspiring teacher candidates in a culturally responsive way.

Robert’s feast name in Sm’algyax is Liimiiuum Hala’ayt and he is from the Laxsgiik (Eagle) Clan. Coming from a matriarchal culture, he acknowledges his mother’s side first.  He comes from Norwegian homesteaders who came to Canada three generations ago.  On his father’s side, he is the eldest grandson of Helen and Johnny Clifton from Txałgiu (Hartley Bay, BC).  He is proud to be Gitga’at and his cultural knowledge and two worldviews has allowed Robert to facilitate learning that increases people’s intercultural appreciation and competencies.  He uses his story and lived experience to inspire restorative relationship building between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples and the education system.

Robert holds a Master of Education (Educational/Instructional Technology) and a Bachelor of Education (Intermediate/Middle School Concentration) through the University of British Columbia having completed his Bachelor of Education through the Native Indigenous Teacher Education Program (NITEP).

Robert is eager to begin to form and nurture relationships that will make it possible to continue the good work already taking place in the school district ensuring a strong future for Coast Mountains’ learners and schools.

Coast Mountains School District is fortunate to have an individual of Robert’s calibre joining the District Leadership Team.
