CMSD82 Memo to All Employees re Curriculum Implementation Day – Jan. 20, 2017

Dear CMSD82 Employee:

In anticipation of the Winter Break, we wanted to share an update with you related to the re-design of the grades K-12 curriculum.

As you know the grades K-9 curriculum is fully implemented. Educators working in grades K-9 are continuing on their journey with the re-designed curriculum. Many educators have embraced the use of core competencies, curricular competencies, big ideas and curricular content toward a more personalized and flexible learning environment for our learners.

The Ministry of Education has extended the full implementation of the grades 10-12 curriculum giving individuals more time to transition to the changes. The grades 10-12 re-designed curriculum is now scheduled for full implementation in the 2018-2019 school year allowing people more time in the 2017-2018 school year to prepare for the changes.

While our District Curriculum Implementation Team membership has changed, this new group continues to focus on the needs of not only grades 10-12, but also the continued support of our educators in grades K-9.

As previously shared, Friday, January 20, 2017 is a Curriculum Implementation Day and we share the following plans for your information.

Grades K-9 Plans for January 20 Curriculum Implementation Day:
The overwhelming feedback we received from the September Curriculum Implementation Day reflected that the elementary and middle schools wanted to be given the opportunity to plan individually for January 20. The Curriculum Committee heard this feedback and, as such, individual school or groups of schools are planning the January 20 Curriculum Implementation Day for the grades K-9 educators in our system. If you are not aware of your school’s plan for January 20, please contact your School Principal.

Grades 10-12 Plans for January 20 Curriculum Implementation Day:
Suzanne Hoffman is a member of the Ministry of Education’s “Outreach Team”. This popular district leader joined a team of field-based educators, dedicated to working with school districts around the province on the three-year implementation of the re-designed B.C. curriculum. Suzanne is formerly the Superintendent of the Langley School District and has an engaging working session planned for us on January 20. She will be in our district on January 20 to present to all educators who work in grades 10-12. Suzanne will be addressing the overall curriculum re-design while also specifically addressing aspects unique to the grades 10-12 draft curriculum.

It is expected that all CMSD82 teaching staff (grades 10-12) will be in attendance at this presentation on January 20. The working session will be held at the Northwest Trades & Employment Training Centre in Thornhill from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Coffee and snacks will be available at 8:30 a.m. Lunch will be “on your own” from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

There is fantastic work being done in our district in so many different areas. Educators have embraced the change from an outdated industrialized model of education to that of a more personalized and flexible model. While there is angst and trepidation out there (there was for grades K-9 too!!), we would encourage you to be a risk-taker when it comes to the re-designed curriculum.

We will send out a reminder with more specific information in the new year. In the interim, we include three links that will provide you with more information related to the curriculum re-design. They could make for an interesting read.

If you have any questions or concerns related to the plans for the January 20 Curriculum Implementation Day, please contact your School Principal.

Wishing you all the joys of the Holiday Season and all the very best in the coming year!

Janet Meyer
