Coast Mountains School District is working towards becoming a leader in sustainable practices and environmental awareness. The school district is proud to have supported many energy conservation initiatives over the past several years promoting environmentally friendly practices and reducing our collective carbon footprint at all levels of the organization.

There are currently many projects and initiatives that have been carried out in schools and classrooms throughout Coast Mountains School District that include recycling programs, anti-idling signage, turn-it-off programs for lighting and computers, composting, creating a community garden, tree planting, water conservation awareness and last summer’s four-week District-Wide School Summer Closure.

The District-Wide School Summer Closure initiative proved very successful in its primary objective of achieving a 10% savings reduction related to the usage of electrical utilities/air conditioning costs during that period. Additionally, this initiative also provided for the following opportunities during the closure period:
– a common summer break for School Principals and Vice Principals;
– a common vacation period for School Custodians with limited custodial services during the four-week school closure;
– completion of summer maintenance work projects by our Facilities Department within school facilities while avoiding building usage obstacles.

The school district plans to continue this successful green initiative with the implementation of a four-week District-Wide School Summer Closure for the period of July 17 to August 11, 2017 inclusive. Kindly note that unless authorized by the school district’s Facilities Department, the scheduling of summer extra-curricular events or activities held in school facilities must be coordinated “outside of the 2017 District-Wide School Summer Closure period of July 17 to August 11 inclusive”.

Everyone’s support and cooperation is appreciated towards the continued implementation of this green initiative necessary for the betterment and improvement of Coast Mountains School District.
