National Day of Mourning


The National Day of Mourning is observed annually in Canada on April 28 to honour those who have lost their lives while working on the job. The purpose of the National Day of Mourning is two-fold … to remember and honour those lives lost or injured and to renew the commitment to improving health and safety in the workplace … to prevent further deaths, injuries and diseases from work.

Every year workers, families, employers, communities and others come together at ceremonies held around the province and the country to remember those who have lost their lives to work-related incidents or occupational disease, and to renew their commitment to creating safe workplaces. Since its inception, the observance has spread to over 80 countries around the world, but is known in most other countries as the Workers’ Memorial Day.

CMSD82 News Release – C. Byrd, MEMSS Vice Principal Appointment – Aug. 1, 2018


The Board of Education for Coast Mountains School District is pleased to announce the appointment of Christine Byrd to the position of Vice Principal at Mount Elizabeth Middle/Secondary School effective August 1, 2018.

Christine has demonstrated steadfast leadership in serving as Vice Principal at Nechako Elementary School since March 1, 2014 and is a valuable addition to the leadership and instructional team at Mount Elizabeth Middle/Secondary School.

She holds a Bachelor of Education Degree from the University of Victoria and a Master of Education Degree in Educational Leadership from the Vancouver Island University.

Christine is an exceptional educator and she is passionate about success for all learners, including those from diverse and rich cultural backgrounds. CMSD82 News Release – Mark Newbery, Skeena Middle School Vice Principal Appointment – March 9, 2018


The Board of Education for Coast Mountains School District is pleased to announce the appointment of Mark Newbery to the position of Vice Principal at Skeena Middle School effective August 1, 2018. This position reflects the addition of a second Vice Principal at Skeena Middle School commencing the 2018-2019 school year.

Further to Mark’s decision to explore other career options, he has expressed interest in the Skeena Middle School Vice Principal position and the school district has accepted his expression of interest.

Mark has served as Principal at Hazelton Secondary School since August 1, 2015 and as Principal at Majagaleehl Gali Aks Elementary School from April 2013 to July 2015. A long-term employee with the school district, he has held various teaching positions in our Hazelton schools.

CMSD82 Internal News Release – Executive Assistant Level II Appointment – April 3, 2018


Coast Mountains School District wishes to announce the appointment of Blanche Olson-Wight to the position of Executive Assistant Level II. Blanche will assume her new role effective April 3, 2018 following the transition from her current position.

Blanche joined the school district in January 2008. She held several part-time support staff roles before assuming the position of Sub Dispatch/Help Desk Clerk within the Human Resources Department. In November 2016, she assumed the role of Accounts Payable/Accounting Clerk in the Finance Department, a position she currently holds.

Her experience includes roles as an Office Administrator and an Insurance Agent prior to her tenure with the school district as well as her background knowledge of the school district in the support staff roles she held over the past ten years.
