The development of the Aboriginal Enhancement Agreement for Coast Mountains School District 82 began during the 2014-2015 school year and was developed in partnership with the school district’s Aboriginal communities, partners and the District Aboriginal Education Advisory Committee, the Steering Committee for the Enhancement Agreement.

Information was received from Aboriginal education coordinators, community information gathering sessions that included Aboriginal families, community groups, Band Council representatives, Elders and educators, a public survey to all Aboriginal communities as well as an Aboriginal Student Forum consisting of students from our middle/secondary schools across the school district. The input reflected wishes, goals and challenges including suggested strategies and processes that provided guidance to the discussions and thoughts when developing this document.

A Writing Group comprised of representatives of the District Aboriginal Education Advisory Committee created multiple drafts of the Enhancement Agreement for consideration. The historical and critical importance Aboriginal peoples place on the preservation of their language and culture was respectfully recognized and honoured while writing this document.

The Aboriginal Enhancement Agreement is intended to guide and support the daily education of Aboriginal students and to emphasize the commitment of all professionals in recognizing the importance of Aboriginal history and culture in their regular practice. The end goal is to improve the success of all Aboriginal learners within Coast Mountains School District 82 with equitable opportunity to achieve the Dogwood Diploma.

The Aboriginal Enhancement Agreement is the school district’s commitment to the education of our Aboriginal learners whereas the Local Education Agreement is a legal agreement that relates to funding and education services.

On the recommendation of the District Aboriginal Education Advisory Committee and Education Committee, the Board of Education formally adopted the school district’s Aboriginal Enhancement Agreement at its February 28, 2018 Regular (Public) Board Meeting and authorized the implementation of the Enhancement Agreement goals by District Staff within the schools of Coast Mountains School District 82.

In addition, the Board of Education requested the Ministry of Education Aboriginal Education Enhancement Branch receive a copy of our Aboriginal Enhancement Agreement as evidence of the strong Aboriginal student success focus that the school district is committed to.
