CMSD82 News Release – 2018-2019 Leadership Staffing Changes – March 7, 2018


The Board of Education for Coast Mountains School District 82 wishes to announce the following leadership staffing changes for the upcoming 2018-2019 school year.

Mark Newbery
Currently the Principal at Hazelton Secondary School, Mark is exploring other career options for the future and has decided he will not return in his principalship role next school year. Mark has served as Principal at Hazelton Secondary School since August 1, 2015. A long-term employee with the school district, he has held various teaching positions in our Hazelton schools including the role as Principal at Majagaleehl Gali Aks Elementary School. The Board of Education extends its sincere gratitude and appreciation to Mark for his valuable contributions and efforts made in his leadership roles.

Jan Thorburn
Currently the Vice Principal at Hazelton Secondary School, Jan has been appointed to the position of Graduation Success Advisor effective August 1, 2018. This new position reflects the school district’s commitment to focus strong leadership on facilitating increased success for our learners. The initial focus and commitment of this new role will be directed to the school district’s most vulnerable communities in the Hazeltons. Jan has served the school district in numerous teaching roles within our Hazelton schools and in her current leadership capacity since August 2011. Jan’s experience in both the classroom and as an administrator will benefit this new role including her passion about creating new ways so that all children can become successful learners. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Bachelor of Education degree from Mount Allison University, and a Master of Education in Multidisciplinary Leadership from the University of Northern British Columbia. The school district is grateful to Jan for her willingness to take on this important leadership role. We look forward to welcoming Jan to her new position and we extend our best wishes to her for every success in her new role.

Dan Striker
Currently the Vice Principal at Mount Elizabeth Middle/Secondary School, Dan has chosen to return to a teaching position within the classroom. Dan has served as Vice Principal at Mount Elizabeth Middle/Secondary School since August 1, 2013. He has taught at Mount Elizabeth for more than 20 years and is a passionate advocate for the school and the community. Sincere gratitude and appreciation is extended to Dan by the Board of Education for his valuable contributions and efforts made in his leadership role.

In the interim, Coast Mountains School District will be actively seeking a Principal and Vice Principal at Hazelton Secondary School as well as a Vice Principal at Mount Elizabeth Middle/Secondary School for the 2018-2019 school year. A Canada-wide search will begin this week.
